Is gender a factor in road safety?

A new report from the European Transport Safety Council ( www.etsc.eu ) published this week suggests that gender is a factor that we need to consider more fully in road safety. Across the European Union, 49% of the population is male and 51% female. Yet, if we look at road deaths, 76% are men and 24% women. Men are far more likely to die as car drivers or passengers than women. Yet women are more at risk as pedestrians and public transport users.

In Great Britain over 90% of offences on the road are committed by men.

So, if we want to have safer roads, we need to achieve a more female approach to driving and road use. Once again, the future ought to be female.

I have worked with Rob in both his present capacity as freelance consultant and during his time as Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS). He brings enthusiasm and commitment to his work and is a highly professional colleague in any task.

Early in 2013, he worked with ETSC on the issue of Flight Time Limitations, rules governing the hours of work for pilots. This is an issue of some concern within Europe. If we get the new framework wrong, the travelling public may be at additional risk. On ETSC’s behalf, Rob chaired a meeting of the leading experts in fatigue and brought together their views in a synthesis paper that has subsequently been circulated to Members of the European Parliament and the Commission. The paper reviewed the research evidence and argued for a more scientific approach to fatigue management.

He has also chaired a number of events for ETSC in Brussels, keeping presenters to the timetable and ensuring that there was plenty of time for audience participation. He has always handled these events in a lively and good humoured way. I know that those who have attended have always taken away very positive experiences from these conferences and workshops.

If you are looking for someone who can bring intellect and commitment to a task, Rob is the person to choose.

Skills Funding Agency

Liz was recruited to co-ordinate our work in relation to skills planning as part of the development of Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone. Liz brought good knowledge, enthusiasm and excellent organisation skills to all aspects of her role.

Liz used her contacts and excellent networking skills to garner opinion and input from education and skills professionals as well as those of employers, bringing together these different views undoubtedly added value and depth to our research and planning.

At each stage Liz was organised and remained focussed on both the current outputs and the timescales of the end project. Liz has been a pleasure to work with and I would thoroughly recommend her to others wishing to recruit her in a similar capacity.
